SOUP ... Synovative's Office Utility Pak is a set of desktop utilities to assist the user in proper care and maintenance of their Small Office/Home Office environment.
SOUP will remind you, on a weekly basis, to run disk maintenance, remove spyware and perform web updates. Shutting off the "automatic" updates will restore some of the lost power of your desktop. Performing disk maintenance on the weekly basis will keep your disk access from degrading over time. Best of all, you don't have to remember to do these things. SOUP's StartUp Assistant will guide you to them at the appropriate time.
SOUP provides a simple backup scheme that works well for most casual users.
SOUP also provides a utility to test for network connectivity. This utility will let SOHO users know if their network and their connection to the Internet are working properly.
Synovative's Office Utility Pak 9
There are three core utilities in this release: "StartUp Assistant", "Backup and Shutdown", and the "Connectivity Checker."
The StartUp Assistant will perform several tasks for you at startup time:
it will force a refresh of DHCP addresses for TCP/IP. This is useful if your PC moves among more than one network or if there are frequent Network problems
it will run the a windows cleanup manager or CCleaner and remove extra files as you startup.
it will lead you through the proper set of utilities that should be run once a week to keep your PC tuned. This allows you to turn off the "automatic" updates for these products, returning power and speed to your PC.
Backup and Shutdown is the most complex of the utilities. It is designed to save critical data and then shut down the workstation. It will always save the files that are your operating systems registry, all .INI files in the WINDOWS directory, all of your FAVORITES as well as all files and folders in MY DOCUMENTS. The Backup and Shutdown Catalog will display a list of valid backups that may be used for recovery. Backup and Shutdown works best with a PC configuration that has 2 hard drives. The backup is then placed on the second drive.
Connectivity Checker will test your TCP/IP connection. For those with broadband connections who want to check their connection the connectivity checker will let you know if you are connected to your Internet Service Provider.
